Day 26: God's Steadfast Love

God, thank you for your steadfast love.
I’m flipping the Sunday devotional today, starting with the song and short reflection from the UMC Board of Discipleship. Honestly, that might be enough on its own. But I’m still thinking...
Steadfast love. What does that mean? Much as we might like it to mean that we will never experience problems and life will be easy and happy all the time, that kind of love is a fairy tale—and not a very good fairy tale, at that. Psalm 32 offers a richer and more robust account of God’s steadfast love—a love that never ends and never fails, no matter what life throws at us. As you listen to Kacey Musgraves’ “Rainbow,” take a deep breath and consider how God might calling you to “let go of the umbrella” and trust in God’s steadfast love.
I’m thinking—how can we move this from the easier applications in life to the harder ones? We can thank God on a rainy day for a dry place to be, for books to read, for games to play, and for the hope that rain brings growth to the living things outside. We can thank God in the summer heat for shade, swimming pools, and ice in our drinks. If we can do that—if we can see small blessings even in things that may cause discomfort (we love to complain about being too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry)—then what about the bigger difficulties?
When life gets hard, can we still see the rainbow, the silver lining of God’s goodness in the middle of it all? Are we learning in the midst of our struggles? Are we growing as people? Are we becoming more empathetic? Do we see and feel God walking with us?
What difficult spots have I been in that may remind me of God’s goodness?
