Day 33: Laughter

Thank you, God, for laughter.

Today, God, I thank you for laughter. This is another Sunday when the added devotional and today’s sermon go deeper than I can simply express in my words of gratitude.

I can’t really remember the last time I had a full, gut-deep, tear-streaming laugh. These days, I suppose I’m more of a silent chuckler. Still, I find humor in many things—maybe even in things that aren’t supposed to be funny. But there’s some truth in the old saying, “If you don’t laugh, you cry.” Life is complicated, and with a complicated life come complicated emotions.

So maybe what I’m really grateful for today is not just laughter, but the gift of humor itself. Thank you, God, for that grace—for humor woven into the fabric of our lives. Thank you for friends and family who remind me to smile. Thank you for the little moments that break through the heaviness with lightness. And thank you, God, for reminding me that joy still lives here too.

We do see it, sometimes, even when we’re not looking for it. Laughter still happens at funerals. Laughter happens in the midst of catastrophe. Laughter even bubbles up when we’re supposed to be the most serious (in fact, people trying to be serious is often funny to me). If we look back through many of my gratitude entries, it’s the common and uncommon parts of God’s creation that bring a smile to my face—because you take care of us. From the oddity of dreams, to people meeting under remarkable circumstances, to the beauty of creation.

Enjoy the rest of this devotion as shared through music and the words found on the General Board of Discipleship website.

Where do you find joy and laughter as a gift from God?

General Board of Discipleship Devotion

“Fill me with laughter.” This is not what we expect so deep into the season of Lent. We are supposed to be getting more serious the closer we get to Good Friday, right? Or, perhaps Psalm 126 is right on time. Laughter, stories, and memories of God’s provision are necessary at all stages of our journey with God as individuals and as family in Christ. They shore up our faith and feed our hope. They remind us that God’s goodness still infuses all creation, and God’s love remains steadfast. So, as you listen to P!NK’s “Cover Me in Sunshine,” take in the words and consider how they might serve as a prayer, a call to God to bring sunshine and laughter as reminders of God’s sustaining and life-giving love.
